SCHILLER GOLDEN, JUNIOR ALL-WORLD

(Rochester, July 26)… This past weekend produced some milestone moments for members of the Rochester Knighthawks lacrosse team. John Grant Jr. also took home some hardware in Manchester, England, earning Top Attackman honors, All-World status and a silver medal.

On Saturday, Schiller reached an international milestone as he won his first gold medal at the 2010 World Lacrosse Championships. He will talk about the victory on Thursday, July 29th at 4:45 p.m. on the John Di Tullio Show on 1280 WHTK, FM 107.3 and whtk.com. The Penfield native and Team USA defeated the defending champion Canadian team 12-10 in Manchester, England. The longtime Knighthawks defenseman/transition man was still trying to grasp the magnitude of the moment as he sat in an airport terminal at JFK on Sunday afternoon.

“It is hard to put into words,” said Schiller. “It was crazy. It still hasn’t set in. To win the gold and be part of Team USA is the pinnacle of my lacrosse career.”

Schiller added the gold to his National Lacrosse League title in 2007 with the Knighthawks and 2008 title with Major League Lacrosse Rochester Rattlers. He shared the moment with five of his family members which included mom and dad, and his wife, Jennifer.

The win broke a two-game losing streak to the Canadians. The United States won their ninth world championship by rallying from 9-8 and 10-9 fourth-quarter deficits. The Americans had led 8-4 entering the third quarter. Keeping the game close down the stretch was the plan, according to Schiller.

“We liked our matchups and our defense was comfortable in our system,” he said. “We knew the offense would get onboard and (Paul) Rabil and Ned Crotty were huge down the stretch. ‘Doc’ (Brian Dougherty) had a huge game for us and we knew they would come back. That’s what championship teams do.”

Schiller will now have the offseason to savor the moment before the Knighthawks open their training camp in November.

“The celebration was awesome,” he said. “We achieved our goal that we set out to accomplish. It was great to be part of it.”

In other World Championship news, Rochester Knighthawks forward John Grant Jr. was named to the All-World team and the Top Attackman of the World Games. He finished the tournament with 13 goals and six assists. On Saturday, the Peterborough, Ontario, native led Canada with four points (3+1) en route to silver medal honors.
