FARTHING GOES FROM ONE CHAMPION TO ANOTHER
11/13/2012 - 10:19am

By Carly Szydlowski --
The Rochester Knighthawks recently announced the signing of five players, including Peterborough, Ontario native Mark Farthing. Standing at 6-1 and 188 pounds, Farthing is a swift defenseman who has had his fair share of lacrosse experience. By signing with the Knighthawks, he will be one of many players at training camp fighting for a roster spot on the 2012 National Lacrosse League World Champion Knighthawks. When Farthing found out he was going to be signed by the Knighthawks he immediately began to focus on preparing for Training Camp.

“Obviously it is exciting to get signed onto a team like the Knighthawks,” he said. “There seemed to be a good mood around the team and organization during open tryouts. Most of all I am excited to get training camp and show them what I can do.”

Farthing was a member of the Peterborough Lakers of the Ontario Junior “A” Lacrosse League from 2007 to 2010. In four seasons with the Lakers, he played in 59 regular season games and recorded seven goals and 21 assists. Due to his impressive performance on the Junior “A” Lakers team, Farthing was called up in 2010 to play professionally for the Peterborough Lakers of Major Series Lacrosse.

He has been a member of the MSL Lakers for three seasons, playing from 2010 to 2012, and has appeared in 25 total regular season games. In his most recent season with the Peterborough Lakers of the MSL, Farthing and his teammates fought through the playoffs and came away as the Mann Cup Champions. The defenseman played in five playoff games, posting three assists for the Lakers. Farthing battled for the Mann Cup alongside current Rochester Knighthawks players Brad Self and Cory Vitarelli and was able to share the experience of being named Mann Cup Champions with them.

He commented on this experience stating, “It’s a great feeling to win the Mann Cup and being able to be in Peterborough with all the awesome fans they have there. I’ve known Brad and Cory since we were kids and now to get the opportunity to play with them in Rochester is really exciting for me.”

Along with playing for the Junior “A” and MSL Peterborough Lakers, Farthing has played for the Senior “B” Norwood Nitro of the Ontario Lacrosse Association and the Brampton Inferno of the Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax). He played for the Nitro in both the 2011 and 2012 seasons and in that time he appeared in 14 games and posted six goals and 11 assists. During his short stint in CLax, Farthing further proved himself to be an effective and talented box lacrosse player. He played for the Inferno for the 2011 season and in just 14 games, he posted 10 goals and 18 assists. He also led the team with three short-handed goals in the 2011 season.

Although Farthing has had plenty of experience playing box lacrosse, he has not yet been able to completely break into the National Lacrosse League. Farthing was drafted by the Colorado Mammoth in the 2010 NLL Entry Draft in the sixth round. After not appearing in any games in the 2010 season, the Mammoth released Farthing and he was later picked up by the Toronto Rock. However, he was released by the Rock shortly after and most recently signed with the World Champion Rochester Knighthawks.

Farthing is hoping that this opportunity with the Knighthawks will lead to the beginning of his professional career in the NLL. He is looking forward to making an impression on the coaching staff for the Knighthawks at Training Camp coming up in a few weeks and hopefully appearing in his first NLL game this season.

Through his NLL experiences so far, he has taken advantage of playing alongside veteran players stating, “Any time you go to an NLL camp and play lacrosse at the professional level you can take a lot away from it. I’ve been able to play alongside veteran NLL players and every time I have the chance, I try to learn as much as I can from them and gain more knowledge about the game.”

The Knighthawks open Training Camp on Saturday, November 24th and Sunday, November 25th at Total Sports Experience in Gates, where Farthing will be battling other hopefuls for a roster spot. Farthing is grateful for the opportunity that has been presented to him and is eager to truly begin his career playing in the NLL.

Although he expects it to be a challenge, Farthing is looking forward to Training Camp stating.

“I expect it to be hard because it is a professional league and they are going to push us to our limits right away,” he said. “I am ready to give it all I’ve got and meet the expectations the Knighthawks are looking for. I know it is going to be tough, but I am preparing myself to give it my all at Training Camp.”
