(November 28, 2012)… The movie “Invincible” follows local school teacher Vince Papale’s journey from open tryouts to a starting role with his hometown Philadelphia Eagles. The sequel could very well feature Montreal native Patrick Hargreaves.
The physical education teacher at Mont Lasalle High School in Laval was selected to play in the National Lacrosse League with the defending champion Rochester Knighthawks. Today, he was surprised with an official Knighthawks jersey, as the announcement was made in Montreal. Take a look at the story on CBC.
"It is a real surprise. I have a class in an hour so I am going to try to teach," he said. "I think I will wear the jersey all day just to show the kids that when they persevere there is a nice goal to go for."
Hargreaves and Mark Kirby will make their professional lacrosse debuts on Saturday December 15th at 7:30 p.m. at the Bell Centre. The preseason game will include the Rochester Knighthawks and their longtime rivals, the Toronto Rock.
“We will always be an organization that steps up to promote the game anywhere,” said Knighthawks Assistant General Manager Landon Miller. “It's not only an organizational mandate....it has cultural importance for myself and (Owner & GM) Curt Styres.”
The two stars of the Québec Lacrosse Federation were selected by the Rock and the Knighthawks during the Québec Lacrosse Showcase held on November 17th at the Club West Island in Beaconsfield. Thirty five players, all members of the Federation and performing stars in Québec, Eastern Ontario or the USA, had gathered and competed for the honor of playing with the Rock and Knighthawks in the December 15th preseason game.
Hargreaves, 39, was rated No. 1 in the areas of conditioning, defensive abilities and physical strength. Hargreaves is one of the very few Québec players who plays and excels in box lacrosse, field lacrosse and intercrosse.
Kirby, 25, and has been playing lacrosse in Kahnawake where he became a great offensive player and a power forward. At 197 pounds, the Québec Senior Lacrosse League goal scorer has been cited for his ability to charge the net with both agility and efficiency. Kirby will dress and play with the Toronto Rock.
Knighthawks fans can listen to the game live on Sportsradio 950 ESPN and www.sportsradio950espn.com.
