Veteran Knighthawks defenseman Scott Campbell has a penchant for collecting loose balls, but is equally as quick off the turf dishing out one-liners. In this edition of “Know Your Knighthawks,” Communications Assistant Emily Forrester gets to know “Soupy.”
Forrester: What is your proudest moment as a Knighthawk?
Campbell: Well that’s an obvious answer. Since we won the championship last year it’s got to be that. But in the same year my wife gave birth to my daughter, so that was really exciting as well!
EF: Well congratulations on both counts! And I’ve heard you have a tattoo. Where is it and what does it mean to you?
SC: Yup, just one tattoo on my calf. It’s for my buddy who passed away in a car accident when we were younger. My good buddy and I got a big Van Halen “V” in memoriam to him with his dates around it. Definitely, someone who expired too early.
EF: I have heard tell that you’re the jokester on the team… What’s the best prank you’ve ever pulled?
SC: Well, here’s the thing, I’m not really a prankster. I’m more of a one-liner guy in the awkward moments. Sometimes it doesn’t make me real popular with the team, but if I see an opening to make someone feel awkward I take it.
EF: Now, is there a fast food item that you wouldn’t be able to live without?
SC: I am very partial to burritos. Gourmet burritos from Chipotle, not the microwavable chimichangas from a gas station. I think the world would be a pretty rotten place without them.
EF: Tell me about your dream vacation. Where are you, who are you with and what are you doing?
SC: You know what? My wife and I did go on a very nice vacation to Mexico for the wedding of a good friend of ours. It was like a high school reunion, but it was with a lot of family as well. My wife’s parents even came out and it was great. Somewhere warm, a nice destination, and with no technology. I don’t need work to be calling me every hour when I’m trying to relax.
EF: That sure does sound perfect. So let me paint a picture for you: You come home and turn on the TV after a long day at work, and one of your teammates is starring in a reality show. What show would it be, and who is on it?
SC: I’m not going to say Vno (Matt Vinc), because everyone would say Vno since he’s such a hunk. I’d like to make fun of Brad Self and Cory Vitarelli. Set it in Peterborough, since it’s kind of like a “Honey Boo Boo Child” type atmosphere. So with Brad Self and Cory Vitarelli we could have a “Selfy Vit-Dog Child” show or something.
EF: I’d absolutely watch that. So, who are you rooting for in the Super Bowl?
SC: Well, I’m not a big sports fan, which is pretty ironic considering. But I do like Grey’s Anatomy.
EF: Okay…Do you have any hidden talents?
SC: I once knew how to ride a unicycle. I actually owned a unicycle and could ride it. I don’t know where it went though. It got lost after I moved out of my parent’s house, I think. I’m not sure if I could still do it though, since I haven’t done it in a number of years.
EF: What is your favorite thing about lacrosse?
SC: I mean, can anyone really tell you why they like their sport? There are a lot of things. It’s fast and a little bit rough. Both the physical and mental parts of the game are different and great. You have to play at a high level to understand it, but I just have a really good time playing it. Every once and a while I get to slash someone who I don’t necessarily like, so that’s a bonus.
EF: Do you have any awkward nicknames?
SC: I get ‘Soupy’ a lot, since my last name is Campbell. I like it though! I think it’s pretty good.
EF: That’s a pretty sweet nickname. Our fan question this week comes from Jason Childers on Facebook. He wants to know if you own a kilt?
SC: I actually do not. I own a sporran though, which is part of that kind of dress. To put it bluntly, it’s kind of a man purse. When I played for Team Scotland in 2007 I had to rent a kilt, actually. You can rent kilts just like you rent tuxedos, but you just feel like you’re wearing another man’s dress. I come from a very Scottish family, but I don’t own a kilt.
