KNOW YOUR KNIGHTHAWKS with Jamie Batson
05/01/2013 - 9:28am

This second-year defenseman may not be afraid of beating the opposition on the floor, but you would be surprised to know what really freaks this Knighthawk out. Communications Assistant Emily Forrester got the scoop when she sat down with Jamie Batson.

Emily Forrester: Which would you prefer - speaking any language of your choice fluently, or being able to speak to animals?
Jamie Batson:
Definitely animals. That’s a good question.

EF: What is your favorite holiday?
JB: I liked Halloween the best growing up because I loved the whole vibe and the scary aspect of it. So I’d still have to say Halloween.

EF: So I’ve heard that you’re one of the fastest guys on the team. If you could challenge anyone in the NLL to a race, who would it be?
JB: Oh man, there are some fast guys in the league. Probably Jesse Gamble on Toronto because he’s pretty quick. I play with him on the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks in the summer for the MSL (Major Series Lacrosse).

EF: I bet you could dust him! Throughout your entire lacrosse career, where has been your favorite place to play?
JB:
Rochester for sure. We’ve got a great owner, great coaches, and we’ve got a really great group of guys too. It’s been awesome playing here. And our fans are the best, too!

EF: Do you think you could survive without technology?
JB:
Yeah, I think I could. I’m not real big on Facebook or Twitter. I guess you could say I’m pretty old school when it comes to technology. I’m pretty sure I could manage without it though.

EF: What are three things that you always pick up when you go to the grocery store?
JB:
I always pick up stuff to make smoothies. I like bananas and berries for that. I always get chicken and sandwich material too.

EF: I’m absolutely terrified of spiders… Do you have any phobias?
JB: Well I’m really not a fan of rats or mice. I don’t know that I would call that a phobia though. You know what? I’m disgusted by ketchup. The first time I had it I was probably five years old at McDonald’s and I hated it so much I spit out my hamburger. Then once as a teenager I tried it on a hamburger again accidently and I hated it then too. I’m not sure what it is about it, but I just hate the smell of it.

EF: Who on the team would you most likely find in the gym?
JB:
Probably Matt Vinc and Tyler Burton. Those guys are pretty dedicated to staying in shape and staying jacked.

EF: Those guys do seem pretty solid on the floor! So, imagine it was your last day on earth. What would you do?
JB:
Last day? I’d probably like to be outside near the water with friends playing some sports. Just tossing the ball around and spending the day outdoors with friends and family.

EF: What is your favorite song right now?
JB:
Probably “Year of the Wolf” by Motörhead. It’s not new, but I listen to it when I run.

EF: And the fan question for our playoff edition comes to us from Cathy Zamboni on Facebook. She says: “I just went to my first NLL lacrosse game and loved it. What is your favorite thing about lacrosse? What draws you to the game?”
JB: Everything about lacrosse makes it the perfect sport for me. I love the high intensity, aggressiveness and fast-paced nature of it. Basically everybody that I’ve met through this sport is a good group of people. I like the speed and the contact of it for sure. The culture and the history of lacrosse is something that is very cool too.
