STYRES PICKS SON IN NLL DRAFT
09/20/2013 - 2:43pm

By Travis Larner -- Although the Rochester Knighthawks had only four picks in the 2013 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft, and did not make their first selection until the third round, they managed to make league history.

With the 55th and final selection in the draft, Rochester Owner and General Manager Curt Styres drafted his son, Brandon. It is the first time a father has drafted his son in the 27-year history of the NLL.

“I am very, very fortunate. I don’t know how many owners or GMs get to draft their sons,” said Curt, who handed Brandon his first Knighthawks’ jersey right before he walked onto the stage. “It is a huge honor to be in that position.”

The news was a surprise to the 19-year-old. Brandon’s father never hinted before the draft that he would take him, and he did not find out until NLL Commissioner George Daniel called his name.

“I had no idea. All he told me was to brush my teeth and look good when I showed up,” Brandon said. “This is all I needed. I just needed a chance.”

Brandon is a goaltender from Six Nations. He also played in the prestigious Aleš Hřebeský Memorial box lacrosse tournament in Prague in 2012. Over the past two years, he has witnessed his father’s Knighthawks win back-to-back Champion’s Cups. He has closely watched three-time NLL Goalie of the Year, Matt Vinc, who has lent him some advice.

“I was already getting some pointers from Matt Vinc and have been out practicing with him,” Brandon said.

“He’s willing to take the shots and he’s put in the time in order to get the experience and to get better,” Vinc said. “I look forward to seeing him in training camp. It will be a good experience for him.”

Brandon takes up a lot of room between the pipes with his tall frame and broad shoulders. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 235 pounds, he presents a large obstacle for shooters.

“He’s a pretty big kid. That’s one of the things that you look for in a goalie usually. If he plays his angles right, it’s tough to get by him,” said Cody Jamieson. “He’s a hard worker. He’s been trying to get better, and he’s taken a lot of strides over the past couple of years to do that.”

Brandon’s first opportunity to suit up for his father’s team will be at training camp in November. When asked how much sleep he will get as he anxiously awaits his first team practice, he replied, “Probably not that much.”

“I will give it all I have and make the most of this opportunity,” he said. “I’ve been in the gym and have been training hard (to get ready for training camp).”
